Quilt: Jack 'O Lantern Faces (FPP)

We'll guide you through the design process, teaching you how to complete 9 FOUNDATION PAPER PIECED faces into a beautiful throw quilt finishing around 42"x42". You'll also learn essential quilting techniques, including fabric selection, cutting, piecing, and quilting. Students will receive a printed pattern at the first class.
FOUNDATION PAPER PIECING can be extremely rewarding! Most students pick up the technique around the second class. This technique ensures all points are sharp and at least 1/4in from all edges. Each block finishes perfect every time!

Basic sewing knowledge necessary. Students should be able to use their machine to sew a straight seam, wind a bobbin, and thread their machine (store machines available on a limited, first-come basis but student must supply thread). Class intended for students ages 15 and older or ages 10-14 with adult assistance.Some sewing may be required outside of class times. This class runs over 6 weeks and assumes quilt will be approximately 42in x 42in. Additional sessions available for $15 each (same day/time each week).
Material requirements for a throw-sized quilt approximately 42in x 42in:
Fabric for quilt front:
*Fabric 1 Faces: 1 yd (original used orange fabric)
*Fabric 2 everything else: 2 yd (original used black fabric)
Additional requirements:
*Backing: 3 yd for 45in wide or 1 yd for 108in wide
*Batting: Crib/Baby sized package approximately 50in x 60in (example used low-loft batting like Warm & Natural or similar)
*Binding: 0.75 yd or a total of 5 yds of packaged binding
*Sewing machine, thread & bobbins, scissors, pins or clips, any other notions students like to use when sewing.
Preparation prior to first class:
*Fabric must be ironed prior to beginning class.
*OPTIONAL: If pre-washing fabric, please zig-zag or overlock the cut edges to reduce amount of fraying.
Optional:
*Students are encouraged to bring their own rotary cutter, ruler, and mat.
*Pre-washing is not required; however, students may do so if preferred. If pre-washing fabric, students are strongly encouraged to zig-zag stitch each cut edge to avoid excess fraying during the wash and dry.
*Material requirements for larger quilts available upon request.
Schedule:
Week 1: review handouts and patterns, discuss technique, start block one
Week 2: continue sewing blocks
Week 3: finish sewing blocks
Week 4: sew rows and columns then add desired borders
Week 5: finish sewing borders and begin quilting
Week 6: finish quilting and complete binding by machine
