Sewing 101 - 4 weeks

Always wanted to know how to sew, but don't know where to start? Have a sewing machine, but don't know how to use it? Come learn how while having fun and learning about fabric, patterns, and basic sewing skills!

Sewing basics will be discussed with a focus on proper technique and safety.Once you have the basics down, it's time to explore and play with fabric! Beginning sewists will complete 3 beginner-friendly projects. All students will complete a project in class.

This class is intended for student 15 and up.

This is a 4-week program. Students are not required to take each class in order but beginners are encouraged to do so. Each class will build on previous classes and add new skills and techniques. There are four classes that build skills and teach new techniques each session. Classes are scheduled for 3 hours; depending on the individual students, classes may finish in as little as 2 hours.

  1. The first class will cover how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, use different stitches, and use the foot pedal or start/stop button (if applicable). Fabric, thread, and notions are also discussed. Students might leave with a finished pillowcase if there is time to sew.
  2. The second class will cover fabric choices and directional prints. Students will leave with a finished apron.
  3. The third class will cover machine quilting. Students will leave with a potholder.
  4. The fourth class will bring everything together and introduce zippers and "birthing" a bag. Students will leave with a finished tote bag with a zipper.
