Quilting: Lap/Baby size OR small wallhanging
Ready to take the next step in sewing? Need a quilt for someone special? Make a lap quilt with pockets or baby quilt without pockets!
Basic sewing knowledge necessary. Students should be able to use their machine and sew a straight seam. Class intended for students age 15 and older.
This class runs over 3-4 weeks. Some sewing will be required outside of class times. Students will create the quilt top, learn to make a quilt sandwich, learn about few basic quilt patterns, and finally bind their quilt.
Material requirements:
LAP/BABY QUILT
Option 1: Enough to make 4 blocks plus border if using your own pattern choice to make 4 blocks 9x9 each.
Option 2 for a Lover's Knot pattern:
(limited supply at the Craft Room)
*1/3 yard of 3 coordinating fabrics and 2/3 yard of a 4th coordinating fabric
*1/4 yd of additional fabric (can be one of the 3) or 1 package of bias binding that coordinates with all
*1.1/4 yd of flannel for backing
*1/2 yard of low-loft batting like Warm & Natural or enough batting to make 1 square yard
TULIP WALLHANGING
Choose either the pre-cut/yardage list OR the scraps list.
Pre-cut or yardage:
*1-3 fat quarters or 1/8yd cuts for the tulips?(1 to make the flowers all the same or 3 for all different)
*1-3 fat quarters or 1/8yd cuts for the stems and leaves
*1 fat quarter for the back ground or 1/4yd cut (or 3 fat quarters to make the backgrounds different)
*1 fat quarter for the binding or 1 package of double-fold binding?
*2 fat quarters or 1/3yd cut for backing
*low-loft batting like Warm & Natural or?similar will be provided (bring your own if you prefer a white batting)
Scraps: "Sew up" means if you were to sew the pieces together, they would measure to the requirement. Do NOT sew up unless directed to.
*Flower: Scraps should be at least 10in x 10in to make one flower from all one fabric or a variety at least 2.5in x 2.5in in similar colors
*Stems and leaves: Scraps should be at least 5in x 10in to make one stem and two leaves from all one fabric or variety enough to sew up to same
*Background: Scraps should be at least 2.5in square with at least 3 pieces 2.5in x 4in. Total per flower should sew up to 10in square.
*Binding: 2.5in x 70in finished
*Backing: Sew up scraps to at least 15in x 20in or as large as necessary for your quilt.
*Batting: This is a great project for those batting scraps! (Recommended to sew up scraps with zig zag stitches to at least 15in x 20in.)
If student would like to buy supplies from Life In The Craft Room, please come in at least 1 day before the start of the class to pick out fabric and have batting cut.
*Sewing machine, thread & bobbins, scissors, pins or clips, any other notions students like to use when sewing
