Intro to Free Motion Quilting

Discover a way to sew without patterns or any limits. Bring in your scraps or use ours! Blocks can be made to any size. Discover how to join blocks with sashing or continue adding scraps for a full “crazy” quilt top!
Optional: one week prior to start of class, you can come in to get assistance with required pre-work.
1st week is devoted to working with the Fence Rail and 4-patch blocks
2nd week is devoted to working with the Pinwheel and freestyle blocks
3rd week is devoted to joining blocks that you have quilted - especially any pattern that is QAYG (quilt as you go)
Students must bring 2 of each block to class and all blocks should be between 8.5in to 12.5in: Fence Rail, 4-Patch, Pinwheel, and freestyle.

| Requirements: | FOUR BAR Made of four strips of two (or more) different fabrics. Sew each bar to its neighbor. Press to the darker or busier fabric. For a 8.5in finished 4-bar, cut the bars at 2.5in each For a 9.5in finished 4-bar, cut the bars at 2.75in each For a 10.5 finished 4-bar, cut the bars at 3in each FOUR PATCH Made of squares. Cut squares from two (or more) different fabrics. Sew different fabric squares together. Press to the darker or busier fabric. Lay the pieces so the opposite fabrics are against each other, right sides together. Nest the seams. Sew one side across the seam. Press to one side. For a 8in finished 4-patch, cut squares at 4 ¾ inches. Trim finished blocks to 8 ½ inches. For a 10in finished 4-patch, cut squares at 5 ¾ inches. Trim finished blocks to 10 ½ inches. For a 12in finished 4-patch, cut squares at 6 ¾ inches. Trim finished blocks to 12 ½ inches. PINWHEEL BLOCKS Made of HSTs. HST – Half-Square Triangle Make 8 at a time! Layer one square right sides together with the second square. Mark the diagonal lines – both of them! Sew ¼ inch on either side of the marked diagonal lines. Press the squares to meld the thread into the fabric of the squares. Cut from top to bottom. Cut from side to side. Cut on each diagonal line. Press each square the same direction. Trim each square to size and lop off the dog ears. For a 8in finished pinwheel square, start with 11in squares. For a 10in finished pinwheel square, start with 13in squares. For a 12in finished pinwheel square, start with 15in squares. Layout 4 HSTs to create a pinwheel design. Sew top two together to form one row. Press to the left. Sew bottom two together to form second row. Press to the right. Sew the two rows together - pin at center seam. Press to one direction. Repeat with other 4 HSTs to complete second block. FREEFORM BLOCK Made from scraps. Take two scraps and sew them together. Press open (finger press or use an iron). Take another scrap and sew it to the first two. Press open. Take another scrap and sew it to the last set. Press open. Repeat, turning the block as you go. Use orphan strip sets or half square triangles or blocks! Periodically, measure the block. Once it is large enough, trim to correct size. … … Then use those scraps to start another!!! |
